Three Forks Crossing

threeforkscrossing.jpg

This is Three Forks Crossing. If you know much about the history of the Owyhee country, you'll know that Three Forks was a favorite indian spot. They would winter here. Later it became a crossing for stage coaches coming from California to Silver City. There was also at one time an army post here to guard the crossing. The Northern Paiute Indians did not appreciate the white man's encroachment on their lands and often attacked stage coaches and other white travelers. Three Forks was the site of at least one farily major battle between the Indians and the U.S. Calvary. The Calvary lost a cannon in the river during a battle, while trying to get it across the river. Eventually the cannon was retrieved.
